The Client
Jamie is a sole-trader plumber based in Taunton, Somerset. 11 years of experience, Gas Safe registered, a solid reputation among existing customers, and zero online presence worth speaking of.
His digital footprint: a basic Facebook page last updated in 2021, a Google Business Profile with 4 reviews and no photos, and no website. His work came entirely through word-of-mouth and the occasional Checkatrade lead.
When we audited Jamie's online presence in December 2023, he was ranking outside the top 50 for every commercial plumbing search in Taunton. His Google Business Profile had 4 reviews, 0 photos, and no service listings. He was missing approximately 12 calls per week from the Checkatrade lead overflow alone — calls that arrived while he was on site.
The Problem
Jamie's business had three compounding issues:
- Invisible online: Customers searching "plumber Taunton" or "emergency plumber Somerset" never found him. All organic search traffic went to competitors with established profiles and websites.
- Missed calls destroying pipeline: Working alone, he missed 40–50% of calls during working hours. Those callers didn't wait — they called the next number on Google.
- Word-of-mouth ceiling: He'd reached the natural limit of referral-based growth. Without new customers finding him independently, he couldn't grow without hiring — which he couldn't justify without more guaranteed work first.

"I genuinely didn't think it would make this much difference this quickly. I'm turning away work now — I've had to start a waitlist. The AI answering is the part that surprised me most. I come off a job and there are 3 new bookings already confirmed in my calendar. That just didn't happen before."— Jamie (Taunton Plumber), March 2024
Month 4 and Beyond
By month 4, Jamie was considering his first hire. His problem had shifted from "not enough work" to "too much work for one person." At month 3 he was at capacity and turning away jobs.
The system continues compounding: more reviews arrive weekly, the website is accumulating domain authority, and the AI call answering captures every new lead regardless of when they call. The marginal cost of each additional lead is now effectively zero.
This is the leverage point of building a digital system rather than renting leads from a directory: the asset compounds in value while the cost stays flat.
Jamie's results aren't exceptional — they're typical of what happens when a trades business with good quality work finally gets proper digital visibility. The work was already there; the customers just couldn't find him. If you're a tradesperson with good reviews but limited online presence, the opportunity cost of inaction is measurable in missed jobs every single day.
